Adapting 10 Principles of Black Design Aesthetic Investigation will allow the student to study the cultural and historical narratives of a people, as preserved through their architectural heritage and built urban landscapes and to learn to apply that knowledge in contemporary ways that are appropriate and meaningful. Process notation and illustration are critical during the course for each student to evaluate his or her understanding of the content and the materials presented each session.

Course Details and Overview

This course is designed as an introduction to principles I apply and the application of those principles in generating form and place making of environments.

  • By considering these concepts, students will gain the knowledge required to recognize, define, and critique the current conditions of modern architecture, interior design, and urban design one might be better positioned to integrate meaningful elements of black cultural expression in your work.

  • Challenges the romantic notion of Euro-centric, Western, values as universal without proper understanding of the legacy and contributions of people of African descent in building communities in Africa and worldwide.

  • Will showcase built work and investigate some of the diverse ways in which African and black cultural design concepts have articulated a sense of visual identity within the constructed landscape

  • Will evaluate the development of African design from a multi-disciplinary approach, utilizing conceptual and intuitive methodologies and strategies, discuss key theories and persons of impact both detrimental and salubrious.

  • Will cover the impact of visual cultural identity in design in academia as well as in practice, in the urban design realm of placemaking, architecture form making and interior architecture, design, and decorating.

Course Objective

Students will learn to:

  • Consider issues of race, culture, the economy in proposing and formulating contemporary design concepts for existing communities of colour.

  • Relate to a variety of social and cultural norms.

  • Develop an understanding of how culture is a significant component in the development of form and spatial identity.

CPDI AFRICA CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS

Certificates of Completion are awarded to students after completing each of the Modules contained in a course. All CPDI Africa courses are audited, allowing students to pace their progress and learning outcomes. Submission of research and assignments, and other learning objectives given by the instructors, is not required, however we encourage students to complete the assignments to aid in successful passing of the Diploma designation graduation exam. Designation of the Diploma in African Centered Architecture is awarded to a student upon successful completion of 3 (three) full CPDI Africa courses, taken either on the virtual platform, having completed face to face, or in person workshops in Africa, and successful passing of the graduating exam offered once annually.
